Did you know that more than half of Boys & Girls Club (BGC) members in the Austin Area identify as Hispanic or Latino? (2024 Impact Report)
¡Ven a celebrar con nosotros! Come celebrate with us!
During Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month, our Club kids explored the vibrant cultures, traditions, and stories that shape our community. They learned how cultural pride strengthens connection, curiosity, and respect for others.
Inspiring Leaders at Club
Meet Valentina, a proud Latina who has been a Club member for the past seven years. She’s been a welcoming presence for new members, helping them feel comfortable and connected. Valentina takes pride in using her bilingual skills to translate for others, making sure every member feels included and valued. As one of this year’s Junior Youth of the Year candidate, her leadership and commitment to community were recognized by Austin ISD when she received the Excelencia Award, which honors outstanding young Latino leaders.
Valentina shared that helping and motivating others allows her to better understand her peers—their personalities, energy, and needs—and to make sure no one ever feels left out.
We’re spotlighting Karina Garcia, Club Director at Wooldridge Elementary BGC. For nearly two years, she’s created a safe and joyful space for members to learn, grow, and celebrate who they are.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultures and traditions that make up our community. I see how proud our members are to share their family traditions—it creates a beautiful space for learning and connection.”
We’re proud to highlight Miguel Guerrero, a former Club kid who has been part of the BGC family since the second grade. From his first job as a Youth Development Professional to his current role serving Austin youth as our new Director of Teen Services, Miguel’s journey reflects the lifelong impact of the Club.
“I see a reflection of myself in our members. They inspire me, and I hope they see a reflection of themselves in me too—that they’re inspired to learn, grow, and know they truly belong.”
By sharing his culture, language, and story, Miguel creates a safe space where every member and family feels seen, valued, and empowered.
Celebrating Culture and Creativity
Just as our leaders inspire pride and connection, our members embody that same spirit through creativity and celebration. Across our Clubs, they explored Hispanic and Latino culture with curiosity, joy, and imagination.
At NYOS BGC, members celebrated heritage and history by learning about the significance of Papel Picado and making their own colorful designs.
Meanwhile, members from Overton BGC made refreshing Aguas Frescas and crafted paper flowers which are often used to decorate festive events and holidays like Dias de los Muertos.
At Hart BGC, members researched different Hispanic and Latino countries, created flags, and presented their findings to their peers. Flags were later displayed during our staff Town Hall, adding to the celebration and sense of pride across the organization.
Pecan Springs BGC members listened to a read-aloud of What Can We Do with a Paleta? —a story about a young girl’s stroll through her neighborhood and the colorful paletas that bring her community to life. Afterward, members enjoyed their own sweet treats, celebrating culture and connection through a beloved tradition.
When kids learn about diverse cultures and heritage, they grow their curiosity, perspective, and respect for themselves and others. We celebrate the voices, stories, and achievements of our community, reminding us all that every Great Future starts with opportunity.
