On Friday, November 6, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area welcomed a powerful wave of Longhorn spirit to our Home Club for our 3rd annual Longhorn GREATDAY. More than 130 UT Sports Communication students and over 20 UT student-athletes came together for an afternoon of connection, creativity, and active play—bringing energy, encouragement, and joy to our Club kids.
From the moment the doors opened, the Club buzzed with activity. Members rotated through stations that celebrated healthy lifestyles and teamwork: inflatable basketball, putt-putt, bumper ball challenges, soccer drills, kickball, custom button-making, and more. Everywhere you looked, kids were laughing, cheering each other on, and getting to know the UT volunteers who showed up ready to lead and engage
“It means a lot to give back to the community. At one point, we were kids looking up to the older kids; it’s an amazing thing to be able to come and give back.”
We were especially thrilled to have BGCAA Board member and former Longhorn Jamaal Charles join us, sharing time and encouragement with both the UT students and our Club members.
“Longhorn GREATDAY is to give back to the community like Boys & Girls Clubs. It’s always exciting to come and see the Club kids smiling and student athletes having a great time supporting Boys & Girls Clubs.”
Texas State Representative Sheryl Cole also joined in the fun, connecting with both Club members and volunteers. Her presence embodied the spirit of Longhorn GREATDAY—celebrating community, leadership, and the shared commitment to creating great futures for Austin’s youth.
Throughout the afternoon, the shared energy between UT volunteers and BGCAA youth created moments that Club kids will remember long after the day ended.
As one Home Club member, Lee, described:
“Longhorn GREATDAY has made me feel really happy. My favorite was playing basketball with the UT players outside!”
We are deeply grateful to the UT Moody College of Communication students and the UT swim, track, cheer, and football athletes for dedicating their time, enthusiasm, and leadership to our kids. Their engagement helps build meaningful connections and sparks confidence in the next generation.
