Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area Receives National Recognition for Outstanding Board Leadership

Sep 19, 2018

AUSTIN, TEXAS (Sept. 19, 2018) — Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Headquarters based in Atlanta, Georgia, will honor the board of directors of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area (BGCAA) with the 2018 League of EAGLES Silver Award during the Southwest Region Leadership Conference held in Austin, Texas, on September 18 21.

The League of EAGLES Award Program—a key element of the national organization’s Great Futures 2025 Strategic Plan— recognizes the boards of local affiliate organizations for achieving 85 percent or more of the Board Governance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that define the strength of an organization’s board. This is an achievement that also requires 85 percent or more of the individual members of that board to meet those same standards. These standards serve to collectively provide an outcome-based assessment of the board’s responsibilities and overall impact on that affiliate. The League of EAGLES awards program’s KPIs focus on these six components:

Engagement: Engage and attend board meetings
Ask: Ask others face-to-face for funding
Give: Give back by making a personal financial gift
Lead: Lead the organization to achieve strategic initiatives
Evaluate: Evaluate their individual board performance based on a personal plan
Serve: Serve actively on committees or task forces of the organization

“I am profoundly grateful to be working with such strong, active board leadership since joining Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area,” said Misti Potter, CEO of the organization. “Because of our board’s unwavering commitment to success and to serving local youth who need us most, we are able to serve more kids, more often and with greater impact.”

Only 15 percent of the 1,100 Boys & Girls Clubs of America member organizations met KPIs for this awards program in 2017. Receiving the award is a testimony to the dedication and commitment of the BGCAA board and executive leadership to serving Austin youth at the highest level. Led by BGCAA board chairman Sam Zabaneh, members including Dean M. Johnson and David Parks will be present to receive the honor.

Currently under the guidance of the BGCAA board of directors, BGCAA is in the final push of a capital campaign to support construction of its new Home Club on the Sheth Family Campus as well as sustainable operations for Club locations throughout Greater Austin and the surrounding communities. Located on a 10-acre campus, the 32,000-square-foot Home Club in East Austin will allow the organization to significantly increase its impact, bringing life-changing programs and services to more youth, more often.
